Lazio will open the season short in midfield, with Danilo Cataldi recovering from groin surgery and Gattuso facing a selection squeeze.

Il Messaggero reports that the midfielder played for months through groin pain before undergoing an operation in Barcelona at the end of the season, and that his case was more severe than those of Mattia Zaccagni, Nicolo Rovella and Gustav Isaksen. The outlet adds that Cataldi will not return before October.

Cataldi spent the 2024/25 campaign at Fiorentina and returned last summer when the Viola chose against activating their option to buy. His comeback proved timely for Maurizio Sarri, with the club prevented from signing new players. With Rovella out for most of the year, Cataldi reclaimed the deep-lying playmaker role.

Having missed the entire pre-season, Cataldi will need additional time to regain peak condition once he resumes training. It could be some time before he starts a match.

In his absence, Gattuso will hope Rovella stays fit. Youngster Bruno Galassi could earn minutes after impressing in pre-season.
