Gazzetta reports that Gennaro Gattuso will attend Atalanta v Napoli in Bergamo on Sunday to assess Italy options for March’s World Cup play-off.

The fixture features several potential call-ups. Goalkeepers Marco Carnesecchi and Alex Meret are viewed as contenders for the third spot behind Gigio Donnarumma and Guglielmo Vicario.

Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini is on the list, with two goals in 12 Serie A games this season and only 10 minutes in the Champions League. The 22-year-old debuted for Italy in 2022 at 18 in the Nations League against Germany, and missed Euro 2024 after a cruciate ligament injury.

Honest Ahanor, 17, born in Italy to Nigerian parents, has chosen the Azzurri but will only be eligible after turning 18 and receiving his Italian passport.

Gianluca Scamacca’s display will be closely watched, with the striker out of form in recent weeks and one goal in 22 international appearances. Lorenzo Bernasconi’s growing minutes have also put him on the radar.

For Napoli, Giovanni Di Lorenzo is injured, while assistant Leonardo Bonucci has recently observed attacking midfielder Antonio Vergara against Genoa. Leonardo Spinazzola and Matteo Politano are playing regularly under Conte and remain under consideration.

Gattuso has met several players for dinner in recent weeks after a planned two-day camp was scrapped due to club commitments. Italy face Northern Ireland in the play-off semi-final on March 26, then, if they advance, travel to Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina.
