By starting against Cape Verde on Monday, Gavi became, according to Opta, the sixth player ever to play at two FIFA World Cups before the age of 21.
He joins Pelé, Norman Whiteside, Rigobert Song, Salomon Olembé and Samuel Eto'o. Team-mate Lamine Yamal, 18, is experiencing his first World Cup.
A right knee injury sustained last summer kept him out for months, and he returned to competitive action in March.
Despite that lay-off, Luis de la Fuente selected him for Spain's opening game, with the tournament running until 19 July, a decision that underlines his status in the squad.
