Genk and Gent will battle it out for the final European ticket available in Belgian football. After Genk beat OH Leuven and Standard Liege lost to Charleroi, the side confirmed their position as winners of play-off two. Gent, despite a heavy defeat to Club Brugge on Sunday, secured fifth spot in the champions play-offs thanks to KV Mechelen’s defeat to Sint Truiden. While the side who are in the top six are usually favoured, Gent have been incredibly poor during the play-offs, failing to win a single game in the post season.
Gent missed out on European football last season and can ill afford to do so again this year. However, Genk are a side that usually do finish in the top six and certainly have the quality on paper to do so. It should be an even contest between the two sides and will be one that has a huge impact on both teams going into the summer. European football provides a financial boost for Belgian sides and a season without it usually leads to cost cutting. Last season Antwerp lost out to Charleroi, who subsequently failed to make it through the qualification rounds. However, for Antwerp, this had a huge impact on their summer and has seen them have to say goodbye to some key players on a free this coming summer.
