Gent finally lure Rik De Mil away from Charleroi

Rik De Mil has been a wanted man since the summer. Antwerp were keen, as were others like Union St Gilloise. However, when Nicky Hayen was sacked by Club Brugge and Ivan Leko brought in from Gent, the Buffaloes went all in on bringing the talented Charleroi head coach to the club. Today Gent announced that De Mil will be the new head coach of the Buffaloes and has signed a contract at the Planet Group Arena until 2028.

De Mil’s work at Charleroi has certainly caught the eye. After impressing at Westerlo, he was sacked following a farcical draw with Genk at the end of the 2023/2024 season. Charleroi picked him up and he took them from a relegation battling side to entering the Conference League qualification rounds. Sadly, the club fell at the first hurdle, but De Mil has been a wanted man ever since. Gent didn’t want to lose Leko, but at least they can still plan for the long term with De Mil in charge for the foreseeable. His first game in charge will be against Antwerp, one of the clubs that tried to bring him in during the summer.
