Former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué has been fined 200,000 euros by Spain's market regulator for insider dealing.

According to COPE and the Financial Times, he bought 104,166 Aspy Global Services shares on 20 January 2021, two days before Atrys Health announced a 223 million euro takeover offer.

The share price rose about 20% in that period, allowing the ex-Barça player to sell quickly for a sizeable gain.

The CNMV says he held privileged information passed on by businessman Francisco José Elias Navarro, who was fined 100,000 euros for unlawfully disclosing confidential data. The case was classified as a very serious infringement, and the watchdog did not reveal Piqué's profits.

Piqué retired in 2022. He now owns FC Andorra in Liga 2 and has moved into sports events through the Kings League. Both men have the right to appeal to Spain's National High Court.
