Gerenabarrena impressed in Bergamo, sweeping up and using the ball with calm authority in a contest shaped by a second half strike.

According to as.com, Unai Simón started after only three sessions at Lezama following his World Cup break. The first half offered little, beyond Sancet’s bursts and Sannadi chesting a Gere pass to blaze over, with Guruzeta sidelined by a knock.

Early in the second half Zalewski beat Simón from the edge of the box to make it 1-0.

At the back, Areso looked sharper than last season, Yeray stepped in decisively and Paredes marked well. Berchiche was cut inside by Zalewski, then made a crucial tackle on Bernasconi when a second threatened.

In midfield, Galarreta kept things tidy and tried from range. Gerenabarrena was combative and measured, very much in Terzic’s thoughts for the middle.

Out wide, Berenguer flickered but could not sustain intensity on his return to Italy. Williams was quiet on the right and saw little of the ball.

On 60 minutes came a raft of changes. Boiro was lively with two efforts, one from range. Canales might have levelled on 85 but shot over after a Sannadi feint. Navarro added craft, Jauregizar kept tempo, and Djaló finished as an improvised right-back.

Prados replaced Gere on 70 and needs minutes. Jonaneko came on for Areso on 81 and appealed for a late penalty after a run that drew contact, one the referee might have given at the end.
