Germán Berterame, 27, is being linked with a move that would see him depart Monterrey to join Lionel Messi and company at Inter Miami. The reigning MLS champions are set to meet the striker’s reported $15 million release clause, which is in his contract.
Discussing a potential deal, Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas stated, ‘I know an official offer was made, and he [Berterame] has the quality to be a part of this club’ – RÉCORD.
Mas made his intentions clear in that speech, expressing his desire to recruit a high-level striker to support legendary Uruguayan forward Luis Suárez.
Born and raised in Argentina, the striker made his start at San Lorenzo before making a leap of faith to sign for Mexican side Atlético de San Luis in 2019.
In his first two seasons for Los Potosinos, Berterame slowly adjusted to life in the Liga MX. His breakout season came in the 2021/22 campaign, where he scored 17 goals in 37 matches. These numbers caught the attention of clubs across the country, and abroad.
After making move to Atlético Madrid on a free transfer, Monterrey came calling. They prepared an $8 million offer, and the forward’s bags were packed to return to Mexico.
Questions were asked whether Berterame could handle the pressure at a major Mexican club, but he has netted ten plus goals in all five of his years at Monterrey. His best return came in the 2024/25 season, where he scored 21 goals in 38 matches. On top of that, he scored three goals at the FIFA Club World Cup.
His rich vein of form looks to have followed into this season, where he’s already found the back of the net once in two appearances.
Monterrey have desperately been searching for attacking depth. But a potential Berterame departure could signal alarm bells at the club.
Only Sergio Canales joined the forward with ten or more goals in this Apertura. The next best came from Lucas Ocampos, who contributed five.
The club did make a statement by recruiting former Manchester United and Monaco forward Anthony Martial last summer. Sadly, despite all the excitement, he failed to register a single goal during the Apertura.
Rumors had flown around that Antoine Griezmann had been considered, but the manager quickly squashed those stories by claiming it was ‘impossible’.
It’s now time to go back to the drawing board for Monterrey. They could find their Liga MX hopes diminished with the sudden exit of their star talisman.
