Germany were eliminated by Paraguay on penalties at the World Cup, a night defined by stark statistics. The defeat ended their campaign despite long spells of control.
According to Le Progres, Julio Enciso made history as Paraguay's first scorer in a World Cup knockout match. The Strasbourg forward powered a first half header past Manuel Neuer, and the subsequent shootout sealed progress to the last 16. It is only the second time the Albirroja have cleared a knockout round, after beating Japan on penalties in 2010, 0-0, 5-3.
Neuer, now the record holder for Germany appearances as a World Cup starter with 23, also set an unwanted mark. He became the second goalkeeper to concede in at least 10 consecutive World Cup matches. His last World Cup clean sheet came on 13 July 2014, the 1-0 final win against Argentina.
Germany had 75.4% possession against Paraguay, the third highest share in a World Cup knockout match. Only Spain managed more, 79.3% against Russia in 2018 and 76.8% against Morocco in 2022. On each occasion, the team with the ball went out.
This was Germany's first defeat in a World Cup penalty shootout. They had won all four previous attempts at the tournament. Their only other shootout loss at a major finals came in the Euro 1976 final against Czechoslovakia.
