On a redemption night for the German national team, Julian Nagelsmann’s side collected their first three points in their World Cup qualifying campaign with a deserving 3-1 victory over Northern Ireland in Köln.
Here are our German player ratings from the game:
GK: Oliver Baumann - 6/10
Hoffenheim's goalkeeper exuded calmness, but was not really tested throughout the game. Baumann could not do much about the goal from Northern Ireland, which was by far their best attack in the whole game.
CB: Waldemar Anton - 6/10
Was roteted in for Nagelsmann's 3-back-formation to work. Played a solid game and was more calm on the ball than his centre-back partners. Great passing success rate (95%) and solid in the air.
CB: Antonio Rüdiger - 4/10
Another shaky performance from the Real Madrid superstar. Even though he was far better than against Slovakia, it was his mistake that led to the corner and ultimately to Northern Ireland's only goal in this match. Was also booked early and didn't finish the game on the pitch.
CB: Robin Koch - 5/10
Eintracht Frankfurt's starting centre-back got a surprising start for Germany - and showed a solid performance. No errors detected, but also nothing special in form of a good build-up pass or anything similar.
RM: Jamie Leweling - 7/10
Brought some good energy into the game for the most parts. Played at times as a right-wingback,
CM: Joshua Kimmich - 7/10
Was not as dominant in midfield as he was in other games for Germany and Bayern in his career. Overall a solid performance without any exciting sparks - however, he was crucial in breaking up Northern Ireland's counter attacks.
CM: Pascal Groß - 6/10
Another surprise in the starting eleven, Groß was a better midfield partner for Kimmich than Stiller against Slovakia. Was involved in many duels and won most of them and he even tried to help out up-front.
LM: David Raum - 8/10
Maybe Germany's best player of the evening. Was very diligent and kept on running down the left flank. Provided the assist to Germany's second goal. His crosses didn't always find a teammate, but he kept on going throughout the game, without leaving his side open defensively.
CAM: Serge Gnabry - 7/10
Got his team off to a great start and scored a beatiful chip goal in the 7th minute. Besides that, he had no other shot on goal and only 29 touches, meaning that he was barely involved in the game.
CAM: Florian Wirtz - 7/10
Tried his luck in every position in attack, sometimes through the middle but mainly on the left hand side. Built a great duo with Raum. Scored a stunning freekick in the 72nd minute to pretty much close the game.
ST: Nick Woltemade - 4/10
Did not work in this match, could barely hold onto any ball or get in dangerous positions. However, he provided a nice assist for Gnabry. Only got 16 touches in the 60 minutes he played.
Nadiem Amiri (for Serge Gnabry, '61) – 8/10
Maximilian Beier (for Nick Woltemade '61) – 6/10
Leon Goretzka (for Pascal Groß '66) – N/A
Jonathan Tah (for Antonio Rüdiger '82) – N/A
Only players who featured for at least 30 minutes were rated.
