Marcão, father and agent of Gerson, accused Flamengo of a set-up in their legal dispute and explained how it felt to return to the Maracanã after the win over Cruzeiro. “This legal action was a set-up by those guys at Flamengo, I did not take any R$ 42 million, I cannot say much about the case but I will not be silent, the truth defends me,” he told ESPN Brasil.

Flamengo have sued Gerson, alleging he ended his contract early, and are seeking about R$ 42.7 million for breach.

On attending the Libertadores tie, Marcão said: “There was no problem at the Maracanã, I stayed with the Cruzeiro supporters. I looked after my own security, if I do not, nobody does. I was very well received.”

He added: “Flamengo’s fans are the least to blame. There are lots of little robots and people who want things with me. I am very well liked by many Flamengo fans, but inside the club things are complicated, it has to be the way the board wants.”

With Marcão in the stands, Flamengo dominated the first half and led through a fine Arrascaeta strike. After the interval, Lucas Romero levelled with a long-range effort, then Samuel Lino beat William and finished to seal the win. Flamengo now await the winner of Independente del Valle and Tolima in the quarter-finals.

They face Cruzeiro again in the Brasileirão on Saturday 22 at 20:30 Brasília time at the Mineirão.
