A FIFA spokesperson stated on Sunday that Gianni Infantino will stand for re-election as FIFA president in 2027, despite months of turmoil. Infantino has led the organisation since 2016.
He announced in April that he would seek a third term, having succeeded Sepp Blatter in 2016. He was re-elected in 2019 and again in 2023.
Since then, a World Cup has been staged in the United States, Mexico and Canada, and his push to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors was abandoned after sparking major controversy.
In Poland on Saturday for the opening of the Under-20 Women’s World Cup, he dismissed questions about his future, saying there would be a proper time and place to discuss it and that it was not there.
In recent weeks he has drawn public backing from some federations, while others have urged him to resign.
Candidates have until 18 November to enter the race. The vote will be held at the FIFA Congress in Morocco in March 2027.
