Gianni Infantino will stand for re-election as FIFA president in March 2027 despite backlash over his shelved private investment plan for World Cup revenues, a FIFA spokesperson said.

The 56-year-old had said in April that he would run again, and the spokesperson added that nothing had changed.

In early August, Infantino unveiled the Fifa Forward Enterprise, FFE, which would have managed FIFA’s commercial activities and tournaments such as the World Cups with external investors. The proposal was quickly withdrawn amid strong opposition.

UEFA, Concacaf and the AFC disavowed him in a joint letter to the football community in early August. Several leading European federations have since withdrawn support ahead of the March 2027 congress in Morocco.

By late August, Italy joined Sweden, Scotland and New Zealand in opposing the Italo-Swiss official, alongside supporter groups, former players and FIFA Council vice-president Sandor Csanyi.

He retains unanimous backing from CAF, sections of Conmebol, other federations, former players and political figures including US president Donald Trump.

Infantino is currently the only declared candidate. He requires a simple majority of the 211 member associations to extend a tenure that began in 2016 and was renewed in 2023, when European support was broad. Nominations close on 18 November.
