Flamengo won 1-0 against Remo on Sunday in the 26th round of the Brasileirão, but substitute Joaquín Freitas suffered a heavy challenge to his heel and only a booking followed.

Freitas came on after the interval, and on 30 minutes Remo’s Marcelinho caught him with a strong tackle. Referee Lucas Casagrande stopped play and showed only a yellow, VAR official Heber Roberto Lopes did not send him to a review. The Argentine forward, Flamengo’s second signing of this window, arrived on Monday 31 and made his debut against Remo only days after landing in Rio. He has signed a deal running until 2031.

Wearing number 30, he joined from River Plate to bolster the attack and is regarded as one of Argentina’s standout recent prospects. In a recent interview he said he was struck by Flamengo’s high-level facilities and by the scale of support he has seen in Rio.

Freitas is available for Flamengo’s Libertadores quarter-final first leg against Independiente del Valle (EQU) in Quito on Thursday 10 at 21:30 Brasília time. He could get more minutes on his continental bow.
