Gianni Infantino under fire as FIFA drops World Cup stake sale plan | OneFootball

Gianni Infantino faces his sternest test since 2016, with FIFA in crisis over a shelved plan to sell a slice of the World Cup.

According to L'Équipe, UEFA’s hard line, including the threat of a boycott, compelled the FIFA president to abandon the stake sale, jolting the game’s governance.

The upheaval began on Friday morning with the immediate resignation of Infantino’s principal adviser, American Carlos Cordeiro. The former banker previously led US Soccer, the United States Football Federation.

The first visible fractures inside FIFA have now appeared. A statement issued overnight from Friday to Saturday formalised the move, a step unlikely to heal the rifts opened in recent days.

Cordeiro said he was categorically opposed to creating a commercial vehicle, FIFA Forward Enterprise, FFE, which would have been partially open to private investors.
