Allan’s move to Manchester City has prompted changes at Palmeiras, which could open the door for Agustín Giay to earn a run as first choice.
The Argentine started the 3-0 Copa do Brasil win over Santos and supplied the third for Flaco López. He took a pass from Jhon Arias on the right, drove to the byline and crossed for a headed finish.
Abel Ferreira praised the right-back’s impact and his capacity to influence attacks. According to Nosso Palestra, the coach has shifted to a back four since then, handing full-backs greater licence to advance.
In that shape, Giay could put together a sequence. He is vying with Khellven for the role, and is currently ahead in the battle for a starting spot.
Signed in 2024, Giay is still trying to cement himself, having alternated between the XI and the bench and dealt with fitness issues. Palmeiras are not expected to source a like-for-like replacement for Allan now, preferring to use in-house options, with the tactical tweak one way to offset the loss in midfield.
