Oliver Glasner hailed the performance of Nathaniel Clyne, who stepped in for the injured Daniel Munoz in Crystal Palace’s 2-1 win over Fulham.
Star man Munoz missed the game with a knee injury, as Marc Guehi scored a late winner following Eddie Nketiah’s opener to ensure Palace moved fourth in the Premier League.
Glasner says Munoz has been managing a knee injury and that it made sense to give him a rest during a busy period.
“We were managing his knee now for a few weeks,” the Palace boss explained.
“Then it was just yesterday that it was too risky. We never take any risk and it just made sense to give him a break.”
Clyne made his first start and just this third appearance of the season in place of Munoz and Glasner was full of praise for the 34-year-old stepping up.
“For me personally today, the man of the match was Nathaniel Clyne,” he told BBC Sport.
“I think he’s played 20 minutes this year and he’s 34 years of age but he always gives 100% in every single training.
“I told him yesterday that he will start because we saw that Daniel can’t play and showing this performance just shows his character. Of course it shows his quality, but it shows his character, shows his professionalism.
“And it shows who we want to be, that everybody is ready to help the team to win the game and that’s what he showed. He was very impressive today.
“Everybody in football knows how difficult it is if you’re not in a rhythm, not played many minutes, and then you’re starting and playing for 75 or 80 minutes. It’s not easy, especially when you’re 34 but he did it.”
