Serge Gnabry led the German national team onto the field as captain against Serbia. After the victory, the Bayern star spoke about a special evening.

Serge Gnabry had a very special evening during the German national team’s 2-0 win over Serbia. The FC Bayern forward led the DFB squad onto the field as captain and, at the same time, celebrated the team’s first victory under head coach Jürgen Klopp.

After the match, the 30-year-old was understandably moved. “A wonderful experience. A day I’m very proud of,” Gnabry told ZDF. The fact that the evening also ended in victory made it all the more special for him.

The Bayern pro also explained that he hadn’t received any special words of encouragement from Joshua Kimmich before the match: “Nope, not from him, actually. I asked a few others if I should say something right away—whatever. But not really, not much.”

Gnabry emphasizes the significance of the first victory under Klopp

For the German team, the win against Serbia also held special significance from a sporting perspective. Following the 1-1 draw against the Netherlands and the 0-1 loss to Greece, it was their first victory under Klopp.

Gnabry made it clear that results remain important even during a development phase: “You take a win with you. I think, no matter what the process is, it’s important to rack up wins. They’ve always given us confidence for the upcoming games.”

At the same time, the Bayern star warns against setting expectations too high: “Sure, you can’t expect us to suddenly start playing amazing games out of nowhere, especially when we have so many new players on the team.”

For Gnabry, every success can now help accelerate the team’s development under Klopp. The key, he says, is for the team to gel better and better and get back on track.
