Aston Villa scored early on but fell to a 2-1 defeat against Go Ahead Eagles in difficult conditions in the Netherlands.
The Villans went into this game on the back of five wins in a row with manager Unai Emery electing to rest the likes of John McGinn, Morgan Rogers, and Donyell Malen with Jadon Sancho making his second start of the season.
The on-loan forward was involved in his side's opener when his cross was cleared but only into the path of Evann Guessand who put his side ahead with an unconventional finish inside the first four minutes.
There was a strange sight shortly later when Gerrit Nauber challenged Lamare Bogarde. The Go Ahead Eagles man came off the worse though and found himself having the indignity of being booked while also being stretchered off the pitch.
The Dutch side pulled one back just before the break with a clever free-kick routine that required a large dose of luck as Mathis Suray's effort took a big deflection to loop over Emiliano Martínez.
Villa had been the better of the two teams but found themselves 2-1 down with just over an hour gone in the game.
A looped ball over from Joris Kramer caught the Villa defence napping, allowing Mats Deijl to find himself behind the defence before he stabbed the ball home.
The visitors pushed for an equaliser as the weather became very blustery. Perhaps that's why Emiliano Buendía blew a chance to draw level from the spot.
Defender Dean James had been penalised for handball with Buendía stepping up but firing way over.
Go Ahead Eagles were able to cling on for a memorable win that ended Villa's run ahead of a double header with Manchester City and Liverpool.
