VI’s Sander Janssen is reporting that Go Ahead Eagles have turned to Birmingham City in search for a replacement for Mats Deijl. With Feyenoord set to bring Deijl to Rotterdam, Go Ahead Eagles want to bring in Alfons Sampsted from Birmingham City. Sampsted only joined Birmingham City last summer after leaving FC Twente. The former Bodo/Glimt defender has only made eight appearances for Birmingham City this season so may well appreciate a return to the Eredivisie for playing time.
Sampsted initially joined Birmingham City on loan from FC Twente for their promotion season. The side then exercised the purchase option after he played 23 games, scoring once and providing one assist. Yet Sampsted has seen playing time reduce at Birmingham City. The defender has only played six games in the Championship, of which two were starts. His two other appearances for Birmingham City came in the EFL Cup and the FA Cup.
Sampsted would join a Go Ahead Eagles side that shocked Dutch football by winning the KNVB cup last season and qualifying for European football. This season they are currently ninth in the Eredivisie and aiming for a return to European football despite losing key players. One player who has really stepped up for the side this season has been Mathis Suray.
