Three transfer situations Birmingham need to resolve ASAP ahead of the season starting next weekend

Birmingham City have been active in the transfer window this summer as they look to fight for promotion in 2026/27.

The Blues finished 10th in the Championship last season after earning promotion from League One in 2025.

Chris Davies will want to bridge the gap to the top teams, with the Midlands outfit setting their sights on a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2011.

Owners Knighthead Capital have invested heavily in the first team squad in recent years, and have overseen five signings this summer, including a permanent deal for Jhon Solis.

But they still have until 1 September to complete their remaining business before the market shuts for the rest of the calendar year.

Jay Stansfield is the club record signing at Birmingham, and has been a key figure under Davies over the last two years.

However, the forward’s performances at St. Andrew’s have garnered a lot of attention and it has led to speculation over his future.

It was reported earlier this summer that both Everton and Sunderland are monitoring the 23-year-old, although a concrete offer has yet to materialise.

Hull City and Ipswich Town were also credited with an interest in the former Fulham player, with the two clubs gaining promotion last season.

The striker contributed 10 goals and six assists from 44 appearances in the Championship last season, so it’s no surprise that there is interest.

But Birmingham must clear up the situation regarding his future before the season starts, as speculation could prove an unnecessary distraction.

Birmingham have been linked with another forward addition amid the speculation over Stansfield’s future.

It has been reported by Mike White that the Blues are keen on signing Joe Gelhardt from Leeds United.

The striker spent last season on loan with Hull, and the Tigers have also been linked with a permanent move for the player.

The 24-year-old contributed 14 goals and four assists to power the Yorkshire outfit to play-off success.

Gelhardt would be a solid addition to Davies’ side, and he has valuable experience of both the top flight and of earning promotion from the Championship.

So his arrival could be a smart move to bolster their chances of earning a place in the Premier League in 2027.

Secure Jack Taylor ahead of Derby County

Birmingham City are also in competition in the race to sign Jack Taylor from Ipswich Town.

The Ireland international has caught the attention of the Midlands outfit, according to TWTD.

But Derby County and Sheffield United are also interested in the midfielder, who featured 39 times in the league last season as the Tractor Boys earned automatic promotion.

The 28-year-old would bring valuable promotion experience to Davies’ squad, as he knows what it takes to compete at a high level in the Championship.

This has the potential to be a strong signing to bolster their midfield options, and Birmingham should push to get a deal done ahead of their rivals.
