Luis Díaz has played his way into the limelight with a special goal. His goal in FC Bayern’s Bundesliga away game at Union Berlin already attracted a lot of attention last autumn. Now this action has been officially recognized.
The attacking player’s goal in the 2-2 draw in Berlin has been voted Goal of the Year by Sportschau, the second time in a row that the prestigious award has gone to an FC Bayern Munich player. Harry Kane had already been honoured for his goal against FC Augsburg the previous year.
Díaz scored the goal to make it 1:1 after a scene that was emblematic of his style of play. After a pass from Josip Stanišić that went a little too far, the Colombian reached the ball with a sliding tackle before the byline. With a quick movement, he left Janik Haberer standing and then scored from an acute angle past Union keeper Frederik Rönnow.
Sporting director Max Eberl paid tribute to the goal: „We are very proud that Luis Díaz has been honoured with the ‚Goal of the Year‘ award. Goals are what soccer is all about in the end – and we are all happy about particularly beautiful goals,“ explained Eberl. He continued: „The goal is more of a total work of art and shows the extraordinary commitment and passion with which he plays soccer.“
Díaz himself was also grateful: „Thank you so much for the award. When I see the goal, I can’t quite believe that I scored it,“ said the 29-year-old. He added about the moment: „I was just thinking about scoring as quickly as possible so that we could score – it was incredible!“
With the award, Díaz joins an exclusive Bayern list, with Gerd Müller, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Jürgen Wegmann, Klaus Augenthaler, Lothar Matthäus, Jean-Pierre Papin and Giovane Élber having previously won the Goal of the Year in a Munich shirt. The award has been presented by Sportschau and voted for by fans since 1971.
