Internacional and Grêmio begin their Copa do Brasil quarter-final at Beira-Rio on Thursday, both looking to fix blunt attacks.

According to Globo.com, among the 20 Brasileirão clubs the rivals have the second-weakest attacks, with 24 goals each, level with Chapecoense and Vasco and only ahead of Vitória, who have one fewer.

Inter have struggled at home in Série A, scoring 14 in 13 at Beira-Rio, the second-lowest home tally, with only Corinthians and Vasco on 13 worse. New signing Tonny Sanabria, unveiled last week, is an option but is likely to start on the bench and feature later.

Grêmio’s attack has been least efficient away from home, with only six goals in 12 league matches, and they are still without an away win.

On Saturday, Paulo Pezzolano finished Inter’s match against Atlético-MG with centre-back Juninho as an emergency striker despite Alerrandro being among the substitutes, underlining a shortage of attacking options.

On Sunday against Bragantino, Grêmio head coach Luís Castro started Braithwaite at centre-forward ahead of Carlos Vinícius, who appeared only late on. Despite a six-game drought, Vinícius remains the club’s top scorer this season on 18 and should reclaim his place, though Castro has stressed the competition up front.

The first leg kicks off at 20:00 on Thursday at Beira-Rio, with the return next Thursday at the Arena. The winners will face Cruzeiro or Atlético-MG and bank R$ 9 million in prize money.
