Gustavo Gómez fired Palmeiras into the Libertadores quarter-finals with the only goal in a 1-0 win at Cerro Porteño in Paraguay, becoming the competition’s only player to score in nine consecutive editions.

"I am happy at Palmeiras. We have built a lot over this time, I have a very strong bond. I want the best for Palmeiras and president Leila Pereira wants the best for Palmeiras too," Gómez said, speaking to Globo.com.

"It is symbolic, a document. I do not think signing changes anything. I have a big commitment and I am very grateful to Palmeiras for everything it has done for my life and my family. It is just a protocol, not a problem."

The defender has spent eight years at the club and his current deal runs until the end of 2027, with a three-year extension to 2030 set to be formalised. The club views the renewal as well advanced and is preparing something special for the announcement. Earlier this year he was honoured in the trophy museum as the most decorated player in the club’s history with 13 titles. He hopes to finish the year lifting at least one more trophy.

With his family watching from the stands at the Estadio Nueva Olla, Gómez headed in Jhon Arias’s delivery. "I was in the right place at the right time, Jhon struck it very well, I connected with my head and scored. I am very happy."
