Benfica have agreed a deal with Bayern Munich for João Palhinha to return to Portugal, with the Portugal international set to play a major role under Marco Silva.
According to Glorioso 1904, the agreement is valued at 14 million euros, with a further five million in add-ons.
The move also reunites Palhinha with Silva after their time together at Fulham. Analyst Gonçalo Monteiro cited proximity to his children and working again with Silva as decisive factors in returning to Portuguese football.
From a sporting perspective, Monteiro believes Palhinha could become a central piece at Benfica as a defensive midfielder, organising the midfield and giving other areas of the team greater freedom.
Despite the significant outlay, Benfica must keep the squad’s finances balanced, notably by increasing the value of younger players. His arrival is a strong investment in a position considered essential.
Monteiro also addressed Palhinha’s Sporting past, arguing it should not hinder his adaptation at the Estádio da Luz. He pointed to Otamendi as an example and said such rivalries do not weigh on players.
