After months of speculation, Gonçalo Oliveira is leaving Benfica for Rennes in a permanent move worth 3.5 million euros, with a buyback clause included.

Renascença first reported the move, with Record later stating it. The 19-year-old centre-back, captain of Benfica B, came through the club’s academy.

He trained with the first team under Bruno Lage, then José Mourinho, but never made an official senior debut. He had been viewed as one of the most promising defenders to emerge from the Seixal setup.

Interest built across Europe, particularly in France. In April, Top Mercato reported that Lens and Strasbourg were monitoring the Portugal youth international, and highlighted his consistent performances for the B team and in the UEFA Youth League.

Rennes finished sixth in the most recent Ligue 1 season.

In 2025/26 for Benfica, Oliveira has made 33 appearances, 24 in Liga Portugal Meu Super and nine in the UEFA Youth League, totalling 2,882 minutes with four goals and two assists. He is valued at 2 million euros.
