Google searches in Brazil for Memphis Depay have surged 360% since Monday, after Corinthians confirmed his exit on Tuesday, according to Meu Timao.
Wednesday, the day after the announcement, brought his biggest search volume since he signed in September 2024. He also drew more searches that day than all presidential candidates.
Corinthians issued a statement signed by president Osmar Stabile confirming the exit and citing financial difficulties among the reasons. The forward had agreed to take a pay cut and waive other benefits to remain until July 2028.
Even so, the situation may not be final. Growing pressure on Stabile since Tuesday night could prompt a renewed approach to the Dutchman.
Memphis joined in September 2024 during the club’s relegation fight, playing 79 matches with 35 direct goal involvements, 20 goals and 15 assists. He lifted the Campeonato Paulista, Copa do Brasil and Supercopa do Brasil in that period.
Popular searches have focused on any money owed, his wages, appearances, goals, age, potential destination, contract expiry, replacements, titles, 2026 numbers, interest from Brazilian clubs and possible legal action, plus links to Flamengo.
