Real Sociedad head to the Copa del Rey final with Alberto Górriz offering his blessing to Igor Zubeldia. According to Diario Vasco, their Zubieta meeting felt like a handover, the pair sharing almost 1,000 appearances.

Górriz, the club’s record appearance-maker with 599 games, anchored Real’s greatest side and went to Italia 90.

Zubeldia, 29, is past 300 appearances and has already lifted a trophy. He listens as Górriz stresses how rare finals are, saying they should be valued, and that across 15 years he played only two, winning in Zaragoza in 1987 before losing to Barcelona in Madrid a year later.

For Górriz it is a reward and great credit to the players, and he does not hide how much the Bernabéu defeat hurt compared with the joy of victory. Zubeldia says the build-up has been long and is glad the date with Atlético is close.

Zubeldia savoured his first final at La Cartuja but regretted the empty stands due to Covid. He now expects a huge txuri-urdin atmosphere in Sevilla.

Now a match-going fan with his family, often after a pre-match drink with Agustín Gajate, Górriz praises Zubeldia as reliable, consistent and a help to team-mates.
