Valencia have opened negotiations to sign Arnau Martínez, with Ron Gourlay holding talks with Quique Cárcel and the player’s camp. According to AS, he is Carlos Corberán’s priority to strengthen the full-back position after Thomas Munier’s change of mind, and the club aim to try to reach an agreement this week.

Valencia’s CEO of Football moved to formalise discussions once Peter Lim committed to capitalise, if required, the 35 million loan he granted the club, which is close to expiry. With that safeguard, LaLiga has approved an increase to the club’s Fair Play margin, enabling talks over Arnau.

Following relegation to Segunda División, Arnau’s release clause stands at 8 million. Valencia will seek to negotiate that figure down and could instead propose buying only a percentage of his rights, at a minimum of 50 per cent. In parallel, a four or five year contract with improved wages is being discussed.

Both Valencia, out of necessity, and Arnau, out of caution, want the deal resolved quickly.

Mestalla is not his only option, but with one week until the Segunda División season begins, the defender must decide soon to avoid injury risk.
