Ron Gourlay is holding firm behind Carlos Corberán as Valencia reel from defeat at Elche. Around 200 fans waited outside the Martínez Valero to berate players after their 14th league loss, sparing only Guido, Cömert and Ramazani, and venting louder when Corberán appeared with Gourlay watching.
According to AS, Valencia are back in a relegation fight with seven matches left, having fallen into the bottom three in five of 31 rounds. Even so, Gourlay and Kiat Lim have not questioned Corberán’s position and, as of today, do not doubt he will continue next season.
Their stance rests on a commitment to stability. They believe changing coach would stall progress and the project must continue. Corberán has been integral from the outset and was among the reasons Gourlay took the job, as they view him as the ideal head coach.
Recent churn also informs the approach. Across the past five years only Rubén Baraja and Corberán have lasted into at least two seasons, with each change otherwise forcing a reset, including squad building.
Gourlay argues a dugout change alters recruitment profiles and strains finances. He has completed two of four windows he deems necessary, asked shareholders for patience, and targets a return to Europe alongside the Nou Mestalla move. An extension to 2028 is envisaged once safety is secured. He has heard calls for Corberán to resign yet intends to stand firm, with four Mestalla tests to come against Girona, Atlético, Rayo and Barcelona.
