Sunderland have confirmed Graeme Murty’s exit this summer, the Under-21s lead moving on as part of a wider academy restructure.

The club said in a statement that he has left his role as Head of Professional Development Phase. Murty joined in October 2022, overseeing the Under-21s and supporting several youngsters on the path towards senior football.

In his farewell message, Murty described leading the side as an absolute privilege and praised the talent and dedication across the academy. He expressed pride in collective progress and in reaching two finals, and pointed to improved results and pathways.

He also reflected on Tommy Watson clinching the club’s return to the Premier League, a moment he said academy staff would cherish. Murty wished Sunderland continued and sustained success.

Head of Coaching Stuart English thanked Murty for his service and offered best wishes for the future. A replacement will be appointed this summer, with an internal option under consideration.

Sunderland recently promoted John Hewitson to Head of Academy following Robin Nicholls’ departure to take up a new opportunity in New York.
