Sunderland have confirmed Graeme Murty’s departure as head of their Under-21s, part of a wider academy overhaul. He described leading the group as an absolute privilege.

The club said in a statement that he has left his position as Head of Professional Development Phase. Murty arrived in October 2022 and was a key figure in the academy, overseeing the Under-21s and supporting young players on the pathway to senior football.

Results improved markedly during his tenure, with the side reaching two finals, and several prospects stepped into the first-team group. Murty expressed pride in the collective progress made across the academy. He highlighted Tommy Watson clinching the club’s return to the Premier League as a moment staff will cherish.

Head of Coaching Stuart English offered thanks for Murty’s service and wished him well for the future.

Sunderland plan to appoint a successor this summer, with an internal option possible. The club recently promoted John Hewitson to Head of Academy after Robin Nicholls left for a new opportunity in New York.
