Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has shared a brief injury update on Instagram as he continues his return to fitness.

The Swiss midfielder missed a fifth consecutive match on Sunday, watching as the Black Cats saw off Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium courtesy of a Habib Diarra penalty to book an FA Cup fifth-round place.

Shortly before kick-off he posted two selfies with the caption: "Day by day. Step by step. Back soon. All the best today, boys".

Last week, before Wednesday’s defeat at Liverpool, head coach Regis Le Bris said Xhaka and Bertrand Traore were roughly three weeks from returning, stressing the process would be symptom-led and that Traore’s knee problem was managed cautiously to safeguard the season and his career.

On Xhaka’s influence, Le Bris said: "I think it's about ambition, understanding and composure. It's not always something impressive," speaking to Sky Sports. "When the captain is missing, this support, this drive is a bit different."
