Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has missed out on the Premier League’s Transfer of the Season despite being a leading candidate, the award instead going to Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

“Even the people closest to me were saying: 'Why are you going back to the Premier League to join Sunderland?’ I came back because I love the challenge and I had the feeling I need a new challenge.” He told BBC Sport earlier this year.

The former Bayer Leverkusen midfielder was shortlisted alongside Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Arsenal’s Premier League winner Viktor Gyokeres, Chelsea forward Joao Pedro, Bournemouth defender Adrien Truffert and Manchester City duo Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo.

Lammens impressed in his first season at Old Trafford, the Belgium international keeping eight clean sheets in 32 appearances as United secured a return to the Champions League.

Xhaka had been widely tipped given his influence in Sunderland’s first campaign back in the top flight, which ended with Europa League qualification. The Swiss international made 34 appearances in all competitions, scoring one and providing six assists.
