The new Greek generation offered another sign of maturity in the Nations League. In Augsburg, Greece held off Germany’s pressure, was clinical in the second half and went on to secure a second win in the competition.

The visitors’ 1-0 victory marked Greece’s first-ever win against Germany in history. The result also handed Jürgen Klopp his first defeat in charge of the Germans.

Still searching for their first win under the new coach, Germany pressed Greece and controlled possession. The home side created chances but ran into strong opposition defending.

Full of talent, Greece made its intention clear with quick transitions, but struggled to connect its moves in the first half and went into the break with only one objective achieved: keeping Germany’s attack at bay.

After the restart, Germany remained in control of the match, but Greece began to grow into the game. The promising generation showed maturity to turn its opening goal into a result.

Early in the second half, Dimitrios Kourbelis came on and solved Greece’s finishing problem. The midfielder found space through the middle, battled for possession just outside the box and struck across goal. The ball deflected off Joshua Kimmich, deceived the German goalkeeper and ended up in the back of the net.

Greece held on until the end and finished the second round of Group 2 on top with six points. Germany remained on one point and, it should be noted, will undergo a reshuffle in the coaching setup for the next two matches.
