Olympique de Marseille’s new sporting director Grégory Lorenzi said Mason Greenwood’s move to Fenerbahçe was, in his view, inevitable because the player wanted to leave. The English winger completed his transfer on Tuesday for around €40 million, excluding bonuses.

As reported by L'Équipe, Lorenzi said the situation was complicated by the player’s image and that there were not many opportunities. Talks were held to find a compromise with a player determined to depart.

He added that the club faced economic constraints and that suitors did not come forward to buy Greenwood. In his assessment, the market did not rate him at 80 or 100 million.

Lorenzi said the outcome aligned with what the club had planned for the case. Greenwood had endeared himself to supporters, but OM did not want to keep a player unwilling to wear the shirt.

The comments were made at La Commanderie during a joint presentation in which Bruno Genesio was introduced as head coach alongside Lorenzi.
