Grêmio’s new CEO Alex Leitão has moved to clarify the club’s transfer ban, saying the team will begin the 2026 season without the sanction.

According to Gremistas.net, the punishment stems from an outstanding payment to Granada on the signing of forward Matías Arezo. The debt is about R$ 7 million, inherited from the tenure of former president Alberto Guerra. Arezo arrived in July 2024 for €3 million, R$ 17 million at the time.

With no main shirt sponsor in place, the board is banking on the sale of attacker Alysson to Aston Villa for €10 million, plus €2 million in bonuses, to stabilise finances. Of that fee, €4 million would be paid upfront.

The incoming funds are intended to settle the Granada liability and unlock registrations for Portuguese head coach Luís Castro as he builds his squad.

Leitão said the club is seeking the necessary resources, including those already flagged by the previous administration, to resolve the issue. He told supporters the ban would be lifted by the end of the year and all player-related obligations settled.
