Grêmio have settled overdue wages and image rights on Friday, after at least one month in arrears. The club says all payments are now up to date and it has also advanced image rights that were due on 30 this month.
According to Globo.com, the clearout was enabled by the first funds from Viery’s transfer to Fiorentina. The board had promised to settle by last week, but says payment from the Italian side was delayed because Viery’s work visa took longer than expected.
Grêmio intend to readjust the wage bill amid a squad overhaul. For mid-season signings, they are prioritising low transfer costs and smaller salaries than previously offered.
With new income hard to secure, the hierarchy are trying to lower the squad’s wage ceiling. The aim is to sell academy players, as with Viery, and to attract fresh sponsorships.
The main shirt sponsorship remains unsold and has been vacant since December last year.
