A majority of Grêmio supporters want head coach Luís Castro to leave after the club’s Copa Sudamericana exit to Bolívar.

According to Globo.com, an online poll ran from Thursday evening to Friday afternoon asking whether fans backed his dismissal. The outcome showed 57.77% in favour of sacking Castro and 42.23% for keeping him. There were 3,119 votes in total, with 1,802 for a change and 1,317 for his stay.

Grêmio are 17th in the Brasileirão on 22 points from 20 matches, inside the relegation zone. Since Castro’s arrival, the side have played 39 times, with 15 wins, 12 draws and 12 defeats, an overall return of 48.7%.

During the Bolívar tie, sections of the crowd chanted Renato’s name and directed abuse at Castro.

Despite the pressure, the board are backing the coaching staff and say he will remain in post, arguing the daily work has positives not yet reflected in matches. Castro was appointed in December last year on a deal running to the end of 2027 and lifted the Gauchão in March.

Next up is Mirassol on Sunday at 18:00 in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil last 16. The return is scheduled for the following Wednesday at 19:30 at Arena do Grêmio.
