Grêmio have sacked Luís Castro on Sunday. Luiz Felipe Scolari, Felipão, will take charge against Botafogo on Wednesday.

According to Globo.com, the decision was communicated after morning meetings at CT Luiz Carvalho.

Across 50 matches this season, Castro’s side recorded 19 wins, 15 draws and 16 defeats, a 47 percent return, with 66 scored and 51 conceded. Grêmio won the state title and are in the Copa do Brasil semi-finals, yet are battling relegation in the Brasileirão.

In the league, 26 games brought seven wins, seven draws and 12 defeats, and the side have not won away from home.

Grêmio sit 15th, level on 28 points with Vasco, the first club inside the relegation zone, only ahead on the criteria. They lost Saturday’s head-to-head at the Arena.

Castro departs with assistants Vítor Severino and Pedro Mané, goalkeeping coach Daniel Correia, performance analyst Nuno Baptista and fitness coaches Nuno Cerdeira and Roberto Júnior, known as Betinho. The club will now search for a replacement.

There was no release clause in his contract. The payout corresponds to the remaining value of the deal, which cost about R$ 2 million per month including his staff. It is the first managerial sacking under president Odorico Roman, who took office in December.
