Grêmio spending on signings plunges in 2026 second window, commitments at R$ 8m | OneFootball

Facing financial strain, Grêmio have slashed spending in the second 2026 window. They have committed only R$ 8 million to signings, excluding signing-on fees and agent commissions, after about R$ 100 million at the start of the year.

According to Globo.com, five players arrived this window: centre-forward Matheus Nascimento, right-back Diego Caito, centre-back Wallace, forward Jovane Cabral and midfielder Filip Krovinovic, with the last two free. Nascimento joined via an offset against Botafogo’s debt from the Nathan Fernandes and Cuiabano deals, figure undisclosed. Wallace cost R$ 3 million for 50%, and Caito cost R$ 3 million for 30%, with a further R$ 2 million due by December for another 20% and a permanent move after an initial one-year loan.

Grêmio executives say they have a pre-contract with Juventude midfielder Mandaca, who would report in January, and they are trying to accelerate it. However, Juventude and the player deny any agreement. The club could still add an opportunistic deal, a left-sided centre-back as a first-choice option is the priority, and for now Luís Castro has used Wallace there, with staff feeling he has responded well.

Under president Odorico Roman, spending surged early, with two of six additions among the costliest in club history. Grêmio pledged US$ 8 million for 80% of Juan Nardoni, plus up to US$ 2 million in bonuses, and also signed Leonel Pérez for US$ 2.83 million for 50%. Tetê arrived from Panathinaikos for R$ 39.6 million at the time.

Finances were propped up by TV money and player sales, alongside new sponsors. An investor provided bridge funding, while Celso Rigo said in leaked audio he lent R$ 60 million. Salary arrears were cleared in July.
