Grêmio ‘to consider’ move for Santiago Ascacíbar, Estudiantes captain | OneFootball

Amid difficulty progressing talks for Guido Rodríguez, Grêmio are exploring alternatives in South America, with Santiago Ascacíbar now on their radar.

Rádio Gaúcha reports that the 28-year-old Estudiantes captain, whose side won the 2025 Clausura, is among the options identified for the role.

New head coach Luis Castro has made a defensive midfielder his top priority and wants greater ball-winning ability than is available in the current squad. An approach for Flamengo’s Evertton Araújo did not materialise.

Uruguayan midfielder Cesar Araujo, who recently left Orlando City, is another possibility under consideration.

Ascacíbar is under contract with Estudiantes until December 2026 and is valued at around $6 million, roughly R$31.9 million. River Plate are also thought to be interested.

He returned to Estudiantes in January 2023 on loan from Herta Berlin, then was signed permanently in June of the same year.
