Gonçalo Guedes has been named in Portugal’s 2026 World Cup squad after reviving his form at Real Sociedad. Roberto Martínez selected the forward after a campaign of nine goals and seven assists.

According to AS, he joined La Real last summer on a deal to 2028 for €4 million, after a €30 million move to Wolves in 2022.

His time in England did not take off. He played 42 games and scored three for Wolves, then 25 and one at Benfica, and 19 and three at Villarreal.

As a txuri-urdin this season he featured 39 times in league and cup, totalling 2,326 minutes. Previously at Valencia he produced 28 goals and 25 assists in 150 games, 115 in La Liga.

At his 14 August unveiling he called the national team an ambition, noting three years had passed since his last call after moving to England, and, if possible, he wanted to return.

Recalled in the previous window, he said from Portugal camp that the past four years were difficult, he failed to adapt in England and had two injuries at Benfica, but this season brought minutes, backing and happiness. In late March, before injury, he added Real had improved since January and they would keep working to be selected. The World Cup starts on 11 June in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
