Guido wants to join Valencia and is close to doing so. He plans to travel on Saturday for a medical and to sign. He has pushed West Ham to end his stint and, barring setbacks, would be January’s third addition.
Guillem Balagué has suggested he has already rescinded his West Ham contract and will sign for five months. That would let him choose his next move in summer without ties.
Neither financially strong offers such as Gremio’s nor sporting proposals like Juventus’s have shifted his focus. He wants a La Liga return, specifically to Mestalla. West Ham head coach Nuno wanted to keep him despite using him only eight times across three competitions.
Talks with Carlos Corberán have convinced him of his role, with a World Cup months away central to his thinking. At 31, Valencia’s staff view him as a leader with the quality to raise the level. He is prepared to forgo part of his wages.
Valencia accelerated negotiations once Unai Núñez’s arrival was lined up. With Fair Play room after the centre-back’s loan, they can accommodate him until the end of the season. The club had about five million available, including an extra two million permitted by La Liga due to Diakhaby’s long-term injury.
A Thursday meeting in Paterna between Ron Gourlay, Lisandro Isei and Corberán set the last 48 hours in motion. The coach asked for experience, authority and immediate impact. Unai Núñez, 28, and Guido, 31, fit that profile and have La Liga pedigree.
