Arsenal Invincible Ray Parlour has called on his former club to start matches with their strongest line-up – but admits only Mikel Arteta truly knows the condition of his players.
The former midfielder was reacting to criticism of Arteta’s team selection in the 1-1 draw with Manchester City, when attacking stars Eberechi Eze, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli were left on the bench. All made an impact off the bench, with Martinelli grabbing the late equaliser.
“In my era, we always wanted to put a team out that made the opposition worry about us, not the other way round,” Parlour said. “You always try to start with your best team, go 2-0 up, and then make changes.”
However, the Arsenal legend was quick to defend Arteta’s cautious approach, particularly against a City side boasting the likes of Erling Haaland, Rodri and Phil Foden.
“Look, Man City are a good side. Rodri’s back, Haaland’s in form, Foden’s playing well. You have to respect that. Maybe Mikel thought a bit more defensive cover was needed in midfield,” he explained.
Parlour, speaking with HaytersTV on behalf of Netbet Sports Betting, also pointed out that only Arteta and his backroom staff know the players’ physical readiness after a demanding schedule.
“We don’t see training every day. Some players might have little niggles or be carrying knocks. Mikel’s got all the data and all the coaches around him. He’s the one who has to make the big decisions, and he’ll take the criticism if it doesn’t work.
”Only Mikel and his coaches know the fitness and injury situations as they are with the players every day in training – we do not see that so we have to respect his decisions too.”
Although he would prefer Arsenal to be more adventurous at home, Parlour acknowledged the fine margins at this level.
“Yes, it was a bit flat at times, but in the end Arsenal kept going and got their reward. Martinelli’s goal was fantastic, and those moments can still make the difference whether you start or come off the bench.”
Parlour’s overall message? Arsenal should trust Arteta’s judgement, but the sooner they can consistently unleash their strongest XI, the better their chances of keeping pace in the title race.
