Carlos Gurpegui is considering a return to management with Sestao River next season, two years after pausing his career. As reported by as.com, new sporting director Aitor Larrazabal has offered him the job and time to decide.
Gurpegui left Bilbao Athletic in May 2024 after a highly successful campaign. His side won Segunda Federación Group 2, securing automatic promotion to Primera Federación with 82 points and only two defeats.
He had already turned the club down last summer when then technical chief Carlos Pouso made an approach before Aitor Calle’s appointment. Now he is weighing up pulling on the tracksuit at Las Llanas, but he has not yet committed.
When he stepped away, Gurpegui said he needed to stop, reflect and spend time with his family after 26 years away from home. He accepted that stepping back meant renouncing opportunities, and acknowledged he might regret it.
Sestao River are currently led by interim coach Aner Blanco following Calle’s dismissal and he will remain in post until season’s end. The Margen Izquierda club sit seventh on 46 points with two games left, eight behind play-off chasers CD Tudelano on 54.
