Manchester City claimed a 2-1 win over Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium to move within two points of the Premier League summit.
A brace from midfielder Nico O’Reilly helped Man City seal the victory despite an underwhelming second-half performance.
The Man City ace was the clear man of the match following a stellar display, earmarking himself for a World Cup spot with England this summer.
However, there were other displays worth mentioning, especially that of striker Erling Braut Haaland, who played like a man possessed to help Man City clinch the victory.
During that second 45, City were under siege and needed their frontline to step up, and Haaland did.
The 25-year-old won 5/8 aerial and 6/10 ground duels and made three clearances, acting as the first line of defence, tracking back deep, and pressing relentlessly.
While Haaland did miss a golden chance to get on the scoresheet, he also provided the assist for the O’Reilly winner, delivering a stellar cross on his weaker right foot.
After ending his drought, he is building a head of steam with some excellent performances.
But this was different. He knew his defensive contribution in such a crucial game would be just as important as his goals and worked hard for the team.
O’Reilly was the man of the match, and Marc Guehi was imperious at the back, but the Norwegian played a crucial role in this win.
If Manchester City are to topple Arsenal and reclaim the title, they will need this version of Haaland between now and May.
Goals will always define him, but title run-ins are about more than finishing chances. They are about leadership, work rate and decisive moments under pressure.
With Arsenal setting the pace, City cannot afford passengers.
If Haaland continues to blend ruthless attacking output with this level of all-round intensity, Pep Guardiola’s side will believe they can hunt down the leaders.
