Manchester City edged a crucial 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium to crank up the pressure in the Premier League title race, cutting the gap at the top to just three points with a game in hand.
In a meeting between the division’s two standout sides, the match lived up to its billing from the outset. City started brightly and nearly capitalised on a mistake from David Raya early on, before Rayan Cherki almost opened the scoring when his deflected effort struck the post.
The breakthrough did arrive in the 16th minute, and it was a moment of real quality from Cherki. The French playmaker weaved through a cluster of Arsenal defenders on the edge of the box before shifting the ball onto his stronger foot and rifling a precise finish beyond Raya.
However, the lead lasted barely a minute. Gianluigi Donnarumma hesitated when attempting to clear the ball and his rushed clearance struck Kai Havertz, with the ball ricocheting into the net to level the scores in chaotic fashion.
The intensity never dropped. Erling Haaland hit the post early in the second half, while Arsenal responded through Eberechi Eze, whose curling effort also struck the woodwork. Donnarumma then produced a vital close-range save to deny Havertz, before Gabriel saw a header deflect onto the upright as the visitors pushed hard.
City’s persistence was rewarded in the 65th minute. A low cross from Nico O'Reilly caused confusion in the box and Haaland reacted quickest, drilling a clinical finish into the bottom corner to restore the lead.
Arsenal continued to threaten late on, but failed to convert a golden chance when Havertz headed over in stoppage time, allowing City to see out a massive victory in the title race.
