Habib Beye will not become Marseille’s next head coach following the resignation of sporting director Medhi Benatia, Libération reports.
The club has been plunged into fresh instability days after Roberto De Zerbi’s departure. On Sunday, Benatia said he had filed his resignation on 9 February, the same day as De Zerbi. The decision only became public after the 2-2 draw with Strasbourg at the weekend.
Benatia’s exit is understood to have ended the push for Beye, who had emerged as a leading option to replace De Zerbi. The process of naming a successor had become a point of tension between Benatia and president Pablo Longoria. Both figures had distanced themselves from responsibility for appointing Beye.
Despite that, Benatia continued recent talks with potential candidates. One internal scenario involved offering Beye a short-term deal until June, with Champions League qualification triggering an extension beyond that. With Benatia now gone, that route appears shut.
With Beye no longer expected to arrive, the decision on De Zerbi’s successor now rests squarely with Longoria.
