Rennes sit sixth before hosting Paris Saint-Germain on Friday, the same spot they held a month ago after a 2-0 win at Lille that capped six wins in seven. Momentum then collapsed, with a draw and four defeats including 2-0 at home to Lorient, 4-0 at Monaco, a 3-0 Coupe de France exit to Marseille and Saturday’s 3-1 loss at Lens.

Sixth looks deceptive, with Strasbourg, Toulouse, Angers, Monaco and Lorient all within three points. Performances have deteriorated sharply and the side appeared powerless to stop the slide.

Beye’s reign spanned a little over a year and 39 matches in all competitions. Appointed in late January 2025 with Rennes sitting 16th, he arrived at the insistence of owner François Pinault, a relationship he often cited and which kept him in post in late October when the hierarchy leaned towards a change.

Relations with president Arnaud Pouille were at best cordial, and his recruitment of familiar figures from RC Lens, including Brice Samba, Seko Fofana, Przemyslaw Frankowski, performance chief Laurent Bessière and even the dietician, fuelled talk of rival camps. Beye also jarred with some post-defeat messaging and by taking substantial credit for winter bids for Kader Meïté and Jérémy Jacquet. His 1.56 points per game, third-best this century at Rennes, still trailed Bruno Genesio on 1.73 and Guy Lacombe on 1.72, and the decision reflects a club gripped by a form of panic after two seasons without Europe and costly, contested windows.
